Commonwealth Attorney-General Panel

The Attorney-General's Department maintains a specialist native title legal professionals panel through the periodic assessment of applications from Australian lawyers with requisite expertise and experience.

Only panel lawyers qualify to provide native title legal services to approved applicants under the Australian Government's Native Title Financial Assistance Scheme.

Both Oliver Gilkerson and Deanna Cartledge at Gilkerson Legal have been approved panellists for many years.

Insights and Innovation

Our lawyers bring insights and innovations to their legal work for government through their other experiences outside of the law.  Our lawyers have held a senior position in the National Native Title Tribunal, served as a local government Councillor, acted as the in-house native title advisor in the Local Government Association of Queensland, acted as a native title adviser to a Deputy-Premier of Western Australia and advised on some of the State’s largest public and private infrastructure projects.

Broad Experience

In advising its government clients, Gilkerson Legal also brings expertise and perspectives from its work for private sector companies and Indigenous clients.  Our firm has delivered efficient and effective native title and Aboriginal cultural heritage compliance outcomes for projects such as Arrow Energy’s Queensland LNG project, the South East Queensland Water Grid and major transmission line projects by Powerlink Queensland.

Promoting Economic Development

Often by way of joint initiatives in resources, tourism, infrastructure development, housing development, township expansion, water supply projects and the like, Gilkerson Legal assists with economic development initiatives involving both government and native title parties.  Our firm is at the cutting edge of developments in relevant policy and law.  Our work includes innovative land tenure dealings involving the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the Land Act 1994 (Qld), the Aboriginal Land Act 1991 (Qld), the Torres Strait Islander Land Act 1991 (Qld), the State and Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 (Qld) and the Economic Development Act 2012 (Qld).

Traditional Services

Gilkerson Legal has vast experience and expertise in its traditional legal service fields such as legal representation for government clients in native title claims, native title and cultural heritage legal compliance outcomes for land dealings and projects and all aspects of land access for government operational purposes.  We have a particularly strong record in native title and cultural heritage agreement-making.  Our current work includes both the concept development and drafting  for the proposed Template Torres Strait Infrastructure and Housing ILUA and the Template Queensland Local Government ILUA.

Although our firm is located in the Brisbane CBD, we have developed a business model which, through careful cost control and very efficient practice management, enables us to provide high productivity/low cost legal services.  We pass on the benefits to our clients.  Our fees are much lower than those of national firms.  We are also accustomed to providing innovative cost structures for clients including a range of fixed fee services, client cost-sharing services, skills transfer to clients and assisting clients with the development of their own in-house legal compliance systems.
